December 1, 2015, marks the day on which chemical distributors are required to complywith the new Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard, which means that distributors can no longer ship products under the previous Hazard Communication Standard (HCS).
The new standard brings worker safety and health protection in line with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). According to OSHA, the intent is to safeguard against workplace fatalities and injury related illnesses totaling approximately 45 and 600 per year respectively while saving $250 million per year through workplace risk reduction and approximately $475 million attributable to improved productivity.
